History
The Undergraduate Program of Indigenous Social Work (UPISW) was founded in 2007. It adheres to the tradition and missions of the College of Indigenous Studies of National Dong Hwa University aiming to cultivate indigenous culture, and revitalize indigenous art, languages and practice. The Program furthers the vision by training social work students to help indigenous communities and to improve indigenous people’s well-being.
Goals
The Program is committed to the followings:
1.Caring for and improving indigenous people’s well-being.
2.Preparing students for culturally competent social work practice in an increasingly diverse society.
3.Advocating multicultural policies and providing policy consultation to meet the needs of a multiethnic society.
Characteristics
The Program has four full-time faculties, but it is supported by more than thirty other faculty members who are interested in a wide range of academic fields, including aboriginal issues, sociology, politics, law, mass communication, arts, culture and social policy. Furthermore, in response to the requirement of the University, the Program will offer a variety of cross-departmental and cross university courses to maximize learning opportunities for students in the near future.
Course plan
The first year of the Program is to prepare students for entry-level generalist knowledge whilst the final three years are to enhance students’theoretical understandings and build a sustainable professional capacity.
Career Development
The Program leads to a wide variety of career options as shown below:
1.To go into further education in relevant fields, sociology, social work and social policy for example.
2.To obtain civil servant qualifications by taking and passing the Civil Service Level 3 Senior Examination, the Civil Service Junior Examination, and the Civil Service Special Examination for Indigenous Persons.
3.To work as a social worker either in public or private sectors.
Future Prospects
1.To help the development of aboriginal regions and communities in eastern Taiwan.
2.To provide professional consulting services and training and to improve social work service quality.
3.To work closely with other academic institutes via scholarly exchange and cooperation at international and national levels.
4.To work closely with national and local government organizations, communities and non-governmental organizations to promote industrial development in indigenous regions. |
